A successful editor is talented and fast. Navigating around your sequences is important to be able to quickly and FCP has a number of ways to help you move in and out of the sequence.

The Zoom Tool is one way to zoom in (keyboard short cut is "z") Holding the option key with the zoom in tool selected will zoom out.

Another easier way is the keyboard combo of the command + "+" keys to zoom in or the command + "-" keys to zoom out. You can zoom in or out centered on the playhead if you DO NOT have selected clips.

When you see this grey bar, you are looking at each are zoomed in pretty close, which can be a big help.

Using the keyboard key combo of the shift + z key you can "fit to window" which is helpful when you want to quickly get to a point of seeing the whole timeline.
